Indian Parents and Marriage

Indian Parents and Marriage
[If you are looking for Indian parents and travel, please visit this blog.]
I guess one clear difference I see between Indian parents and Western parents when it comes to pestering their 30-something children to "marry and get settled down", is in the approach and decision making freedom.

Western parents (or more often aunts) might try to set you up with someone on a date and ask you to call them, talk to them and spend time with them.

Indian parents, first match horoscopes, then decide that the "family is good", they are respected and respectable people etc, all the aunts/uncles get familiarized with each other and then as some afterthought, ask the prospective bride and groom to be (note that they are already considered groom/bride) to talk to each other.

So this places undue pressure and yet some dads keep repeating the statement, "just because you talk does not mean you are committing, don't be afraid and blah blah blah".

Of course, if you are decidedly ruthless (which I hope to be), then you need not worry about all the aunts and uncles and you can and should be ready to walk away from all this when you feel like.

I think, what Indian parents need to do is to see more fairly tales and movies like Enchanted and DDLJ and other quintessential love stories instead of trying to be practical and organize arranged marriage scenarios.

Enough said.

General Valentine's Day Whine..or wine and cheers?

Ok Everybody it is Feb 14! Now curb your euphoria.
So usually I try to ignore Valentine's day because of the commercialism associated with it. But every year I fail to ignore it. However, what I do is, not fall to the "buying any gift trap" but end up doing something vary different (not really by design, but more due to stinginess - jk). E.g one year, I was out with a camera on a snowy evening and ended up shooting a bunny rabbit as it was prancing about in the snow near White Course Apartments (Penn State Grad Housing).

Another year, (long back), I went for a super long run along the beach (Santa Barbara CA) and ended up getting caught between the ocean and a cliff as high tide came in. Luckily I managed to climb the cliff and somehow scale the 40 ft without falling and survived.
I have also been out for some salsa dancing while at SB. Another year, I decided to collect all the old CD's and aol CD's and carpet my room with shiny coasters.

This year, I was too busy to even think of doing something different. This is because there has been lot of snowfall and most of my free time is used up in shoveling the sidewalks. [My work is doubled because my lucky roommate is in Colorado and conveniently avoiding the shoveling]. Anyhow when I got home on Wednesday evening I decided I would make use of the snow and create this huge 10 ft big heart in the snow using my tracks alone. Ladies and Gentlemen I present to you, the iHeart. ok ok, jk, it is not made my Apple Inc, just by my footprints - made with big winter boots.Once I created this, I thought why not be nice about the whole thing. I could dedicate this snow heart (Note: sappy speech coming up) to my loving family: my mom & dad, sis and bro, b-i-l, my cute nephew and niece and my loving grandma and my late grampa. Further I offer this heart to all the wonderful ladies that are my friends ;).

Facebook To Launch Sites in Spanish/German/French

Facebook announced that it will be launching Spanish language version of its social networking website from Monday (Feb 11, 2008) [Source]. The translation of the website was carried out by several volunteers in about four weeks time (a short time in my opinion).
If you are in Spain or any of the espanol speaking countries from Latin America and visit facebook.com the Spanish version should load automatically. People in other places can change their language settings under the "Account" settings > under the Language tab (follow link).

I tested it and all the links and content are converted to authentic Spanish (e.g. Language=idiomas), however the urls are still in English. So this is a great help even if your settings get changed my mistake. You can hover over the links and figure out your way. On the flip side, you can learn some Spanish computer lingo in the process.

German and French versions will follow soon. I wonder how soon, Hindi, Tamil and other languages will follow? Any volunteers?
